Best Supplements For Skinny Guys (ectomorphs)

supplements.jpgOne of the most common questions I find asked around bodybuilding forums on the web is “what supplements are the best for skinny guys?”. Supplements are much more important for skinny guys (ectomorphs) because their genetics make it harder for them to build muscle, hence the term “hard gainer”. So what are the best supplements recommended for skinny guys? Here’s our list:

Best Supplements For Skinny Guys:

  1. Weight Gainer Powders
Weight gain products are the most important supplement for skinny guys. Muscle building is all about calories for ectomorphs, often ectomorphs need to have a higher surplus than other body types. Weight gain shakes provide a massive injection of calories and BCAAs, essential for growth.
Best weight gainers: Prolab N-Large II, BSN Truemass & CytoSport CytoGainer
  2. Creatine
Anyone serious about performance should be taking creatine. Creatine is not just for weight training, but a near-essential for all sports from sprinting to Bass fishing! Ectomorphs need all the extra help they can get, and creatine can help push out those extra few rep in the gym!
Best creatine products: BSN Cellmass, any reputable creatine monohydrate
  3. Casein Protein
Typically, skinny guys have raging metabolisms! This is one of the factors that hinders lean muscle growth. Most skinny guys will tell you that they tend to eat more often than other, even if they’re not training. Casein protein is important because it releases slowly which means (especially during the night) that your muscles don’t go hungry. Casein protein can take up to 7 hours to be completely absorbed which means a longer lasting fuel source for your muscles.
Best casein products: ON 100% Casein Protein
  4. Dextrose/Complex Carbs
Dextrose is much more powerful than most people give it credit for. It is the simplest all of simple carbs and is awesome for creating a huge insulin spike! Dextrose should only be taken post workout when your body needs extra insulin to move nutrients to muscles as quick as possible.
Best dextrose products: any 100% pure dextrose
  5. EFAs
Essential fats play a huge role in muscle building, and if you’re not getting enough you’ll eb seriously hampering your growth. Products like Udo’s Oil are perfect for bodybuilders, providing a perfect balance of omega-3, omega-6 and omega-9.
Best EFA products: Udo’s Essential Blends

Those are the basics, the essential supplements recommended to help skinny guys build some serious muscle. Other supplements you might want to try include nitric oxide (NO2), testosterone boosters, amino acids, creatine blends and HMB.

Seeing as I saw you recommend Optimum 100% Whey, have you had any experience with their Brand of Weightgainer?
    Pro Complex Gainer

The only protein powder i’ve tried is their gold standard 100%, but being an Ectomorph it didn;t hjave the calroies I need to bulk up!

So comparisons between ON Pro Complex Gainer, and Prolab N-Large II, BSN Truemass & CytoSport CytoGainer?
    —————-
From what I can see the Gainers all have the BCAAs, Whey, and Glutamine, and Dextrose. So I can add Creatine to them to really bulk up?

and can a weight gain supplement act as a post workout / on waking (to stop Carbolic reaction) drink? (i.e. is it fast acting enough..) Thanks!

I checked it out, and as always, ON comes through with another quality product. It’s one (if not the) best brands on the market.

Hi, Im still ecto. I mean it took 9 months for me to increase just 2 kgs. I tried 100% whey, n Cellmass by BSN. But I found creatine best that increased by weight. 100% seems to be a wastage 4 me. I go 2 gym 3 days/week. My stamina has increased n got some cuts on the muscle with little mass in the body. Im a good sprinter but mass is little to compete with most of the athlete in long distance. Plz suggest a good stack or supplement.

Iam losing my hair and a side effect alot of guys have wrote on the net that they have expereinced alot of hair loss that they dont get back when using creatine. Should i be on a Whey Protein?? My undersatnding is that is for the recovery of muscles and the toning. I have no muscles to tone! Thats why i went for creatine.

    Hi buddies ,

It seems I’m not the only one fighting to get some pounds.
Basically I’m doing it to get to another weight category in boxing (heavier) so it is vital for me.

To encourage you folks that struggle for mass too I’d like to proudly declare I gained 18lbs in 9 months of hell hard training , my problem is that I must preserve and even improve velocity and stamina as well…

I had to eat really more than usual and avoid ALL candy style sugars , have a protein supplementation with a mix of whey and 90 protein 2 or 3 times a day according to the harshness of training but always within the recommended ratio margin.

Since my training went up to 3 or 4 hours a day , I had to compensate other losses as minerals ( magnesium particularly ) and help my body deal with fatigue accumulation and possible unwanted cardio-vascular effects with a daily omega 3 supplement.

The last time I drank a coca-cola is more than 10 months ago and my diet is composed almost exclusively of spaghetti and fish ( fish releases far less toxins than meat and this helps for an optimal rest ).
My fat ratio is between 5 and 7% of body mass ( allowed up to 10% max ).

Well , I must confess this has been some sort of hell for me but I have a goal and this helps me not to fall again in the pizza/tv/candy/soda way of life I led before , seeing the results of such a “sacrifice” I’m going on!!!

To conclude , I’d mention that the hardest part for us skinnies is to find the suitable training intensity and then provide the adequate rest periods , once the equation is balanced , you’ll see your body grow slowly for sure but radically!

    Truly yours.
    Stephen P.

I’m sorry to say but a lot of you guys are wasting time and money on supplements. Some are good for what they’re worth. These supplements can damage your liver being that organ has to process and break down those products.
Do more research on weight gain for skinny guys and you’ll find it worth while. The key things are proper nutrition, muscle confusion, and plenty of rest. Don’t spend hours in the gym trying to bulk up. 30 min or so…train hard and go home. I can’t stress the rest part enough. Good luck to you all.

  18. Posted by scott- pro mma fighter. on August 2nd, 2011 at 2:28 am

Hi im scott out of all of the supplements above there is really only one that has worked for me. at the start of the year i was around 64kg in weight and i tried so hard to bulk and unfortunetly burst a hole in my wallet buying all different types of suplements and for an mma fighter you need to bulk and control weight. i found online a supplement called “sci OMNI MX Hardcore ” i have gained weight and muscle mass in 3 weeks and i havent stopped using the shakes since also add in creatine into the shake because its so easily mixed with anything im not some scientist trying to promote the product im just trying to help guys put on muscle and weight because i know how hard it is when an ectomorph trains there really is no better saying than NO PAIN NO GAIN eat more , train harder and heavier in weights and rest enough !!

Long time lifter and have taken creatine off and on for the past 10 years. Ive tried numerous brands, monohydrate and CEE, both in pill and powder forms. Decided to go back to the basics with the Dr Max Powers Creatine 3X. I’m loyal to their brand, and wanted to get back on creatine again but not break the bank with some of the products out there.

I’ve gone through two bottles of the Dr Max creatine 3X. Love it. You have to load for a couple of days when you’re first starting, but after that minor inconvenience the results show. Noticed a clear fuller effect in muscle tone and strength improvement.

    Definitely recommended!
